Our journey into backyard chicken keeping began on April 16th, when we welcomed a flock of chicks into our home. It was astonishing to witness their rapid growth; within weeks, they had transformed from tiny chicks into sizable birds, eager to explore beyond the confines of their indoor box.
The Great Escape and Coop Construction
As our feathered friends began to demonstrate their acrobatic skills, attempting daring escapes by jumping onto the rim of their box, we knew it was time to expedite our outdoor coop plans. Fortunately, we had all the necessary materials on hand, thanks to years of resourceful collecting and Erik’s handy skills. Our coop began to take shape using reclaimed 2x4s from a neighbor’s dumpster, old wood panels, hinges, screws, and even wheels, embodying the spirit of sustainability.
Learning and Adapting
Despite our resourcefulness, we encountered challenges along the way. The wheels we chose for the coop, intended to make it mobile, proved too small for its size. Future plans include upgrading to larger wheels to ensure ease of movement. Another creative endeavor was crafting shingles for the roof from recycled cans, adding an aesthetic touch to our functional structure, though this project remains unfinished due to the pressing need to relocate our growing chicks.
Settling In
The transition to their new outdoor home was seamless for the chicks. Their first night, however, revealed a learning curve; unsure of where to sleep, they huddled together beneath the coop for warmth. To guide them, we installed a light inside the coop, a simple yet effective solution that, after only a couple of nights, trained them to retreat to their cozy haven at dusk.
Our Diverse Flock
Our coop now houses a vibrant mix of birds, including an accidental rooster among our Golden Sexlinks, a testament to the surprises that come with raising chickens. Each bird brings its unique personality to the flock, from the skittish Leghorns to the friendly Speckled Sussex and our beloved “Angel Feet” with his distinctive fuzzy feet, whose future with us hangs in the balance due to local regulations on roosters.
Looking Ahead
As our chickens continue to thrive, we eagerly anticipate their egg-laying phase, promising a bounty of fresh eggs and new learning experiences. Our coop, a testament to resourcefulness and adaptability, stands ready to support them through the seasons.
We’re still novices in the world of chicken keeping, open to advice and suggestions from the seasoned pros out there. And if you’re feeling inspired, we’d love to hear your ideas for naming our feathered friends.
